Internet of Things(IoT) for Military and Aerospace

The Embedded Industry is undergoing evolution to transform as the “Internet of Things Industry” and it is growing at a phenomenal pace. The Internet of Things is all composed of intelligent machines that connect to people or among themselves. These machines collect and communicate valuable data that can be combined or compared with data collected from other machines and the relevance of Big data gains prominence along with Internet of Things for this very nature. In fact, a lot of things that are traditionally part of embedded systems are brought to the mainstream by IoT.

In defense and aerospace industry the planes and land vehicles, ships and weapon systems were networked and share tactical data among themselves in the connected battle field. This was happening even before the concept of Internet of Things gained momentum. Today, in aerospace and defense industry the Internet of Things is a prominent force. With innovations in military and aerospace technology that lead to the growth of more autonomous vehicles enabled by embedded systems, the connected battle field is enveloping more intelligent applications and machines.

Rugged embedded computers equip the military machines with intelligence, large amounts of data in the likes of high-definition video are processed by sensor processors, high-performance embedded computers (HPECs) process the big data that connected battlefield generates and networking solutions such as rugged routers and switches optimize the connectivity framework. There is an increased importance on small form-factor embedded computers that are SWAP optimized as the defense forces want to fit a computer and other C0TS products such as network switches into an ultra-small UAS or multiple computers that support different application in a vehicle, for example. The need to fit greater capabilities in a shrinking space is catching up. This is because with the defense forces experiencing the benefit of the connected battlefield, they now want to connect every battlefield asset, whether human or machine, large or small.

There could be numerous benefits that IoT can provide, such as lower costs of sensors and drones, informed, effective and faster decision making in any given scenario and especially in combat situation. IoT will fundamentally change the way militaries operate in future, it won’t be just machines or devices that speak to each other but talking to command and control systems and talking to almost everything. Tactical IoT with advanced communications architecture and devices will enhance the potential of the soldiers in how they operate in the field, shoot, move and communicate. There are applications that stream video from overhead unmanned aerial vehicles and allow soldiers to view nearby ammunition status, communicate with supporting artillery and allow command center to monitor rifle scope.

The Internet of things throws open a large opportunity in defense and aerospace industry. The emphasis is on SWAP and security, the hardware – embedding intelligence into machines and the software that handles all the data generated by intelligent machines. To be successful in future, the defense and aerospace companies need to create products that fulfill the IoT approach and upgrade their technology infrastructure with Big Data, mobile, cloud etc. as the connected world grows.
